Chris French

Mercia Learning Trust Chief Executive Officer

Chris has been our Chief Executive Officer since 2018. He has over 32 years’ experience in teaching, school and trust leadership and has worked successfully in Rotherham, West Yorkshire and (for the last 22 years) in Sheffield. During this time he has worked in or led 14 different schools serving pupils from age 2 to 18 years, in a variety of different contexts.

Whilst he started as a secondary Geography teacher and later subject / faculty leader, he has held a variety of school leadership roles since 1998. These include Assistant Head, Deputy Headteacher (Hinde House 11-16 School), Associate and Acting Headteacher (High Storrs 11-18), before he was appointed as a Principal of Hinde House 3-16 School in 2007. After leading the transformation of this school (and leadership was graded by Ofsted as outstanding), he led the creation of the Brigantia Learning Trust in 2012 which became a partnership of 3 primary, 2 secondary and a 6th form college in north-east Sheffield.

Chris has very substantial experience of leading successful schools and trusts in different contexts and settings, and has a very clear vision for how Mercia schools should operate, and how to maximise the benefits of working together as a multi-academy trust.

Originally from Nottingham, Chris has a BA (Hons) in Geography (1984) and PGCE (1989) from Sheffield University, and an NPQH (2001) from the National College.
